Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup sugar (for the custard)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 egg yolks
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the custard by whisking together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan.
- Slowly whisk in the milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Remove from heat and let cool.
- Once the cake is cool, slice it in half horizontally.
- Spread the custard between the layers of cake.
- For the chocolate ganache, heat the heavy cream until just boiling and pour over the chocolate chips. Stir until smooth.
- Pour the ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
- Chill before serving.
Notes
- Let the cake cool completely before cutting to prevent the custard from spilling out.
- You can use store-bought custard to save time.
